The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. This is scary. In our culture, everyone wants total control over themselves, but Paul is telling Christians that when you become one flesh in marriage, that is not true. Instead, you have to sacrifice your wants for your spouse.
Pastor Ronnie said Sunday in reference to this; "Husbands, your wife needs intimacy. Wives, your husband needs sex." In this way, your husband or your wife needs you to sacrifice for them. Your wife, men, need you to sacrifice watching the ball game to have a conversation about her day. Your husband, women, need you to sacrifice your shopping for a romantic evening.
More than anything else, this sacrificial love that Paul is getting at demonstrates the sacrificial love that Jesus showed for you. That while you and I were undeserving of love, he still died for you.
The challenge today is to show your spouse that same sacrificial love.
